from left to right- Mark (texas) Bryan (Argentina) and Jace, (italy)

travel time: 1 hour, 12 minutes. That felt nice.

Yes, Abbie and I will take this over a 12 hour car ride home, thanks.

The Chris's
I was wondering why it wasn't crowded. For the first time ever, In-N-Out wasn't even crowded. Then I was reminded it was only 10 am. Wow... that's weird... but I got up at 4 am to use the bathroom, and couldn't go back to sleep, and it felt well like lunch time.
And we all rewarded ourselves by going to In-N-Out after our race.
and the green sandals I was wearing... were hers.

It was so much fun. But it was hard too, physically especially (duh), and emotionally.
here we are. the 12 of us. all triathlete-ing for the same reason.
My dear cousin Lisa Jane passed away last October. We all decided- what better way to honor her than by doing what she loved doing most? There is no doubt in my mind that if she were still physically around, she would have done this tri. She and Chris have lived in Tempe, Arizona for a few years. But we all felt her presence. I felt like she really helped me on the run. She is with us. I don't think I could have done it alone to be honest...

Pretzels -- tasted like candy, like chocolate to me after the triathlon... handfuls and handfuls. .. I never would have thought of this.

There isn't a better treat on the planet after a triathlon.

here comes Melissa!

Julie and Kristen coming in strong!
me and the boys. I had so much fun hanging out with all of them last weekend.
brother supporting the women

Ohhh, darling!
Abbie came to find me a few minutes after I finished to give me a big hug. WE DID IT!!! My goal was to finish under 2 hours. AND I DID IT! WE DID IT!
Run time (me): 33 ish minutes
Final Triathlon time:
me- 1:58:36.8
Abbie- 1:46:03.8
Total distance: 1/2 mile swim
13 1/2 mile bike ride
3.1 mile run
I accomplished my goal by two minutes. I can't even express in words what that felt like... how good that felt... and how much my body was hurting... My legs- my quads and calves were BURNING during the run. They felt like iron. And I could feel blisters forming on my feet during the last mile of the run. And the sun came out, and it was getting hot. I decided to run with my Camelback, because I still wanted water. I'm so glad I did, because all of the little stands at each mile marker ran out of water. But not me. I was well hydrated throughout the whole race. This was SO HARD. but it never phased me to stop or slow down. People keep asking what was the hardest thing for me. I honestly don't know. All of it... hahaha. I lost a lot of time on the bike though. These women are amazing... these 30, 40, and 50 year olds passing me like I was standing still! They are amazing...
From this experience, I feel like I may have a new addiction. Triathlons... Abbie and I are signing up for 2 more this summer, at least.
Run time (abbie): 29:57.
Finishing up!
Ok. this picture made me laugh SO HARD. I had no idea how dumb I looked when I ran... Michael has been giving me a hard time. Yes, I look sort of handicapped. But I felt handicapped too. And I sprinted my last 50 ish meters.
here I come...

Here comes Liz, Lisa's friend, finishing her relay of running!
Transition for the run!
bike time (me): 56:39
bike time (abbie): 49:02
Abbie lap 2, still strong!

SANDRA! (63). Isn't she amazing??
me riding away
Abbie kickin butt on the bike!
Transition! Getting out the half mile swim!
swim time (me): 24:02
swim time (abbie): 22:11
I saw Abbie in transition! and our stuff was right next to each other, hence the same last name. It was SO FUN seeing her in the middle of things! I said to her... "GO KICK SOME BUTT ABBIE!" And she was off.

And we were off. The beginning of the swim was SO RIDICULOUS!!! It seemed like for the life of me, I could NOT get in the horizontal position! There were people hitting, kicking, and kicking water in each other's faces, and people back stroking (so they obviously couldn't see where they were going)... But finally, I found my own space, and people could enter at their own will. and I was off.
And we had a "deep water start," meaning we had to tread water for 4 ish minutes before the race started. the lake was deep!
Here we go... not sure if we're ready for this. but ready or not, there we were...
HAHAHA.
Testing the water. It wasn't even cold! it was lower 70s.

Okland's and friend getting ready!
... here we go!!!

My brother Michael has given me so many great triathlon tips. this was his FIRST TIME being a spectator at one. My, the tables have turned!
we are so hard core. And hard work is finally paying off.
last minutes getting our transitions ready!

and I was already getting a rush by looking at everything. The real thing was here. And we were nervous and excited.
Abbie and I both couldn't believe it. The day was here.
Awesome Jess. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteFrank, I'm so proud of you! What an accomplishment. I'm sure Lisa was smiling over all of you! What other tri's are you doing this summer? I really need to get back into training for one.
ReplyDeleteThere's one in Bountiful at the end of June, and there's one in July, at Echo lake on July 10th. That's the important one. the one in Bountiful is sort of a prep for Echo, to see what we need to improve on for our last 2 weeks of training. You should join us! For Echo it's me, Abbie, Michael, Chris O, Chris C, ... so far! Marci is doing one in October. I might do it too if I can learn to mountain bike!
